Carbon Orientation in the Diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum: The Effects of Carbon Limitation and Photon Flux Density ArchiMer
Heydarizadeh, Parisa; Veidi, Brigitte; Huang, Bing; Lukomska, Ewa; Wielgosz-collin, Gaetane; Couzinet-mossion, Aurélie; Bougaran, Gael; Marchand, Justine; Schoefs, Benoit.
Diatoms adapt to changing environmental conditions in very efficient ways. Among the mechanisms that can be activated, the reorientation of carbon metabolism is crucial because it allows the storage of energy into energy-dense molecules, typically lipids. Beside their roles in physiology, lipids are commercially interesting compounds. Therefore studies dealing with this topic are relevant for both basic and applied science. Although the molecular mechanisms involved in the reorientation of carbon metabolism as a response to a deficiency in nutrients such as nitrogen or phosphorus has been partially elucidated, the impacts of carbon availability on the implementation of the reorientation mechanisms remain unclear. Indeed, it has not been determined if the...

Decoupling light harvesting, electron transport and carbon fixation during prolonged darkness supports rapid recovery upon re-illumination in the Arctic diatom Chaetoceros neogracilis ArchiMer
Lacour, Thomas; Morin, Philippe-israël; Sciandra, Théo; Donaher, Natalie; Campbell, Douglas A.; Ferland, Joannie; Babin, Marcel.
During winter in the Arctic marine ecosystem, diatoms have to survive long periods of darkness caused by low sun elevations and the presence of sea ice covered by snow. To better understand how diatoms survive in the dark, we subjected cultures of the Arctic diatom Chaetoceros neogracilis to a prolonged period of darkness (1 month) and to light resupply. Chaetoceros neogracilis was not able to grow in the dark but cell biovolume remained constant after 1 month in darkness. Rapid resumption of photosynthesis and growth recovery was also found when the cells were transferred back to light at four different light levels ranging from 5 to 154 µmol photon m−2 s−1. This demonstrates the remarkable ability of this species to re-initiate growth over a wide range...

Diatom artificial medium (DAM) a new artificial medium for the diatom Haslea ostrearia and other marine microalgae ArchiMer
Gagneux Moreaux, Sindy; Moreau, Christophe; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Cosson, Richard P..
Artificial media are used in physiological studies of microalgae to maintain consistent conditions from one experiment to another and these media must be adapted to the needs of the organism studied. The artificial medium, in this case named diatom artificial medium (DAM), was designed to maintain long-term cultures of Haslea ostrearia and 19 other planktonic microalgae, and to allow physiological studies related to metal metabolism. The biomass and biochemical composition of H. ostrearia grown in the DAM and in a modified Provasoli medium were compared to assess the suitability of this new artificial medium for the culture of this diatom. The DAM provided sufficient nutrients to allow H. ostrearia to grow as efficiently as in the enriched seawater medium,...

Effect of P depletion on the functional pools of diatom carbohydrates, and their utilization by bacterial communities ArchiMer
Labry, Claire; Delmas, Daniel; Moriceau, Brivaela; Gallinari, Morgane; Quere, Julien; Youenou, Agnes.
Phosphorus (P) limitation of phytoplankton growth is known to affect the accumulation and release of carbohydrates (CHO) by micro-algae. However, relatively little is known about the fate of algal exudates, notably their bacterial degradation. The CHO chemical characterization is also not exhaustive, especially in ‘functional’ pools relevant for phytoplankton physiology (particulate reserve [R] or structural [S] CHO) and for bacterial degradation (dissolved mono- [MDCHO] and polysaccharides [P-DCHO]). In this study, we investigated how P depletion and repletion affect the CHO composition in diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii cultures, and the shortterm response of free and diatom-attached bacteria in terms of abundance and potential βglucosidase activity...

Epiphytic Eunotia (Bacillariophyceae) on Podostemum from Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, including new observations on morphology and taxonomy of some rare recorded species Biota Neotropica
Cavalcante,Kaoli Pereira; Tremarin,Priscila Izabel; de Castro,Emanuela Cristina; de Azevedo Tibiriçá,Carlos Eduardo Junqueira; Wojciechowski,Juliana; Ludwig,Thelma Alvim Veiga.
Eunotia is a highly diverse diatom genus in the Neotropics. Considerable morphological variability of the valve showed in several species of the genus resulted in a quite confused taxonomy. Twelve Eunotiataxa attached to Podostemum spp. were investigated using the light microscopy (LM). Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in order to investigate the fine morphology of most abundant taxa. Samples were collected from four rivers from the State of Santa Catarina between March 2009 and July 2010. The freshwater diatom flora from this south Brazilian state is poorly known in relation to its neighboring states. Eunotia biseriatoides has intermediate features betweenEunotia and Perinotia, and the circumscription of these genera is discussed...

Evidence of silicic acid leakage to the tropical Atlantic via Antarctic Intermediate Water during Marine Isotope Stage 4 ArchiMer
Griffiths, James D.; Barker, Stephen; Hendry, Katharine R.; Thornalley, David J. R.; Van De Flierdt, Tina; Hall, Ian R.; Anderson, Robert F..
Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) and Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) are the main conduits for the supply of dissolved silicon (silicic acid) from the deep Southern Ocean (SO) to the low-latitude surface ocean and therefore have an important control on low-latitude diatom productivity. Enhanced supply of silicic acid by AAIW (and SAMW) during glacial periods may have enabled tropical diatoms to outcompete carbonate-producing phytoplankton, decreasing the relative export of inorganic to organic carbon to the deep ocean and lowering atmospheric pCO(2). This mechanism is known as the silicic acid leakage hypothesis (SALH). Here we present records of neodymium and silicon isotopes from the western tropical Atlantic that provide the first direct evidence of...

Extubocellulus spinifer (Hargraves & Guillard) Hasle, Stosch & Syvertsen (Cymatosiraceae, Bacillariophyceae): First report of the species from the Southeastern Pacific with comments on the variability of some of its morphological features Gayana Botánica
Rivera,Patricio; Cruces,Fabiola; Inostroza,Ingrid.
During the taxonomic analysis of strains from marine phytoplankton samples, it was found that a sample contained isolated or short chains of 2-4 small cells. Observations under the electron microscopes revealed the presence of Extubocellulus spinifer (Hargraves & Guillard) Hasle, Stosch & Syvertsen, a minute species until now not reported for the Southeastern Pacific Ocean. In this paper we describe the characteristics of the Chilean cells, comment on the variability of some of its morphological features, and discuss about the differences between the two known species of the genus.

Global Retrieval of Diatom Abundance Based on Phytoplankton Pigments and Satellite Data ArchiMer
Soppa, Mariana A.; Hirata, Takafumi; Silva, Brenner; Dinter, Tilman; Peeken, Ilka; Wiegmann, Sonja; Bracher, Astrid.
Diatoms are the major marine primary producers on the global scale and, recently, several methods have been developed to retrieve their abundance or dominance from satellite remote sensing data. In this work, we highlight the importance of the Southern Ocean (SO) in developing a global algorithm for diatom using an Abundance Based Approach (ABA). A large global in situ data set of phytoplankton pigments was compiled, particularly with more samples collected in the SO. We revised the ABA to take account of the information on the penetration depth (Z(pd)) and to improve the relationship between diatoms and total chlorophyll-a (TChla). The results showed that there is a distinct relationship between diatoms and TChla in the SO, and a new global model...

Growth and metal uptake of microalgae produced using salt groundwaters from the Bay of Bourgneuf ArchiMer
Gagneux Moreaux, Sindy; Cosson, Richard P.; Bustamante, Paco; Moreau, Christophe.
The Bay of Bourgneuf, France, is a main site of shellfish production. In the marshes along the bay, oyster intensive rearing and fattening need the mass production of microalgae. Salt groundwaters, available in this region, support a large part of this production for aquaculture. Studies carried out by local authorities have brought to the fore the accumulation of lead (Pb) in several samples of algal pastes derived from cultures using salt groundwater. The aim of this study was to compare growth, nutritional value and metal (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) uptake of four microalgae grown in two salt groundwaters or in enriched coastal seawater. Cultures of microalgae used in aquaculture (Haslea ostrearia, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Skeletonema costatum and Tetraselmis...

Marennine is a water-soluble blue-green pigment produced by the marine diatom Haslea ostrearia. The diatom and its pigment are well known from oyster farming areas as the source of the greening of oyster gills, a natural process increasing their market value in Western France. Blooms of blue Haslea are also present outside oyster ponds and hence marine organisms can be exposed, periodically and locally, to significant amounts of marennine in natural environments. Due to its demonstrated antibacterial activities against marine pathogenic bacteria (e.g. Vibrio) and possible prophylactic effects toward bivalve larvae, marennine is of special interest for the aquaculture industry, especially bivalve hatcheries. The present study aimed to provide new insights...

Joint effects of nine antidepressants on Raphidocelis subcapitata and Skeletonema marinoi : a matter of amine functional groups ArchiMer
Minguez, Laetitia; Bureau, Ronan; Halm-lemeille, Marie-pierre.
Antidepressants are among the most prescribed pharmaceuticals throughout the world. Their presence has already been detected in several aquatic ecosystems worldwide and their effects on non-target organisms justify the growing concern of both the public and regulatory authorities. These emerging pollutants do not occur as isolated compounds but rather as multi-component mixtures, which may lead to increased adverse effects compared to individual compounds. Freshwater and marine algae seem particularly sensitive to pharmaceuticals, including antidepressants. Studies assessing the toxicity of antidepressant mixture to algae focused mainly on binary mixtures of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. In the present experiment, the freshwater algae...

La diatomee Navicula ostrearia Bory en baie de Bourgneuf ArchiMer
Robert, Jean-michel.
Previously, Navicula ostrearia B. has been described only from the Marennes-Oleron district of the Atlantic coast of France. However, this pennate diatom is also present In the Bay of Bourgneuf where breeding of green-gilled oysters were recognized in sea basins called oyster ponds. A short description of observations made with the optical microscope precedes description of high magnification examination of the frustule made with the scanning electron microscope. This combination of techniques shows a polymorphism between the external and internal surfaces of diatom valves.

Lateglacial and Holocene climate and environmental change in the northeastern Mediterranean region: diatom evidence from Lake Dojran (Republic of Macedonia/Greece) ArchiMer
Zhang, Xiaosen; Reed, Jane; Wagner, Bernd; Francke, Alexander; Levkov, Zlatko.
The juncture between the west-east and north-south contrasting Holocene climatic domains across the Mediterranean is complex and poorly understood. Diatom analysis of Lake Dojran (Republic of Macedonia/Greece) provides a new insight into lake levels and trophic status during the Lateglacial and Holocene periods in the northeastern Mediterranean. Following a very shallow or even desiccated state at the core base at ca. 12,500 cal yr BP, indicated by sedimentological and hydro-acoustic data, diatoms indicate lake infilling, from a shallow state with abundant benthos to a plankton-dominated relatively high lake level and eutrophic state thereafter. Diatom-inferred shallowing between ca. 12,400-12,000 cal yr BP and a very low lake level and eutrophic,...

Modélisation sur vingt ans (1976-1995) de la production phytoplanctonique en baie de Seine ArchiMer
Guillaud, Jean-francois; Menesguen, Alain.
This paper presents an ecological modelling of the Bay of Seine (Eastern Channel) over the last twenty years, chosen as a typical case of eutrophication in a river plume. In the physical sub-model, the Bay is divided into 42 boxes and water fluxes between them are calculated automatically using Ifremer's "Elise" software. A two-layer, vertical thermohaline model is then linked with the horizontal circulation scheme in order to take vertical stratification into account. The biological submodel deals with two chemical elements, nitrogen and silicon, and splits phytoplankton into diatoms and flagellates. Results from this ecological model point out the spatial concordance of highest phytoplanktonic concentrations with the river plume spreading in the bay....

This study commissioned by the Syndicat de l'Elorn et de la Rivière de Daoulas aimed at assessing on a mathemical modelling basis the impact of 3 scenarios of reduction of the loadings of Elorn river (imposed concentrations : 20, 15 et 10 mg/L NO3) on the status of ulva mass proliferation in the Moulin Blanc cowe (Bay of Brest). An ecological 3D model of N, P and Si cycling in the bay of Brest has been applied to a "reference situation": 2004 meteorological forcing combined to recent loadings of the new sewage plant. This model showed that: · the 3 reduction scenarios did not reduce significantly the early summer biomass of ulvae, but allowed to slightly reduce the subsequent summer and autumn levels of biomass (up to 20% reduction for 10 mg/L NO3). Species-specific differences in diatom-induced anomalies in calanoid copepod embryogenesis: are they linked to the stock-piled antioxidants? IBSS Repository
Khanaychenko, A. N..
Egg production and viability of co-occurring in nature copepods, Calanus helgolandicus and Calanoides carinatus, fed diatom, Thalassiosira rotula, and then switched to dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum, were compared in experimental conditions. Egg production of both species on diatom diet was similar (up to 17-22 eggs.female-1.d-1) but no viable nauplii were observed. Development was arrested at different stages depending on degree of anomalies. Abnormal embryos displayed various degrees of deteriorations in pigment distribution and organization of extracellular matrix. Reproductive responses of C.carinatus both to negative (diatom) and positive (dinoflagellate) diets were postponed in comparison with quick responses of C.helgolandicus. After 3 days of...
